The Apple App Store and the Google Play Store host over half a million games collectively on their stores, spanning all genres from the classic puzzle, role-playing and action to the mobile-first hypercasual, merge and simulator.
At the start of the app economy, paid-for games were the norm, with apps like Angry Birds, Doodle Jump and Tap Tap Revenge having a one-time price of $1 to $5. All of these popular titles recognized the value of the touchscreen, accelerometer and other phone sensors to provide users with new experiences.
After the initial wave of paid-for apps made way for freemium and in-app purchases, games made up a large majority of both app store revenues. In-app purchases for items and upgrades, or to skip levels or purchase more content, made game revenue more cylindrical.
Candy Crush Saga, Cut the Rope and FarmVille were first iterations of this, with the developers more focused on adding new content to the base game rather than launching a new title.
With revenues increasing year-on-year, big video game publishers such as Electronic Arts, Tencent and Ubisoft started to invest in the space. Many have their own mobile divisions, which have repackaged classic console games for mobile as well as launch mobile-first titles.
Improvements to smartphone hardware led to online experiences being possible on mobile, such as Clash of Clans and League of Legends. Battle royales, which have 100 or more players in one game, stretched the capabilities of smartphones. Fortnite and PUBG were two of the most popular titles in this market, and two of the most downloaded games in the 2010s.
In the past few years, both Apple and Google have launched subscription-based services that bundle hundreds of games for a monthly cost. Most of these games are highly-rated, paid-for experiences, with the list curated by Apple and Google monthly to give subscribers something new.
