The Canadian app market is a highly consolidated one, with widespread smartphone use and strong per-user consumer spend.

With close proximity to the United States, a lot of the most popular apps in the country come from their Southern neighbour. That said, Canada has a large amount of app developers and a growing security app market, with 1Password, TunnelBear and Windscribe all coming out of the country.

Canada had the highest per capita spending growth among the 10 largest markets at the start of the pandemic, indicating a quick shift to mobile apps.

Consumer spending on apps is not as high as it is in the United States, but is still above average. Canadians spend over six hours on the internet, a higher average than most of Western Europe.

Canada tends to be ahead of the US in terms of mobile regulations, with the country often times publishing regulations which are then co-opted by American states. In June 2023, the Canadian parliament passed a law requiring online platforms to pay news publishers for content shared on their websites. This followed concern from the media industry over access to online advertising and market share. In light of the legislation, Facebook and Instagram removed news content from their apps in Canada.

We have collected data and statistics on the Canadian mobile app market. Read on below to find out more.
