The emerging Turkish app market has seen massive revenue growth in the past few years, with smartphone users steadily growing as access to devices widens.
Even with inflationary pressures, the app economy has managed to grow in the country. Several homegrown talents have been able to meet the demands better than large multinationals, and export their brands globally.
These include Trendyol, an all-in-one ecommerce platform that is competitive with Amazon in the region. Food delivery services such as Yemeksepeti and Getir have grown out of the country, along with transport app Moovit.
Mobile games have also enjoyed strong popularity in Turkey, with a decent chunk of in-app purchase revenue coming from games. PUBG Mobile, Roblox and Candy Crush Saga are all high grossing games in the country.
The volatility in the wider Turkish economy has been a concern for the app market, as a weak Lira makes app purchases more expensive. Apple and Google have both raised prices in the country several times.
The Turkish government has also been accused of online censorship, particularly following amendments to internet regulations in 2022. Platforms with more than 10 million daily actives are required to set up in Turkey, rather than just having representative offices, from which the government can increase their liability for content published on their platforms.
