Cryptocurrency exchange Kraken was launched in 2011 by Jesse Powell and became publicly available in 2013. It is one of the oldest cryptocurrency exchanges still operating, and has built a reputation as a security-conscious exchange, which has made it highly valued in a sea of scammers and fraudulent activity.
One of its early spurts of growth came from the collapse of Mt. Gox, a Japanese bitcoin exchange that ceased operations in 2014 after the theft of hundreds of thousands of bitcoins. Kraken worked with creditors and the Japanese government to help Mt. Gox customers try and find their bitcoins, with a large amount of the customers migrating to Kraken afterwards.
In comparison to a lot of the crypto exchanges in the mid-2010s, Kraken steadily expanded its operations and investments. It was the first crypto exchange on the Bloomberg Terminal, and in 2020 was the first to receive a banking charter in the United States, through the Wyoming Special Purpose Depository.
The exchange has weathered multiple market cycles and regulatory challenges, including a settlement with the SEC over its U.S. staking programme. Today, Kraken remains one of the longest-running global exchanges, offering spot trading, staking, institutional services and an NFT marketplace.
